MODULE 11 - COMMON CHALLENGES

I feel that one of the things that makes elk hunting so rewarding is the amount of challenges and obstacles we must first overcome in order to finally reach success. Success certainly isn’t handed out in elk hunting – you have to earn it. Sure, there are the stories of hunters stepping out 200 yards from their camp on opening morning of their first elk hunt and arrowing a giant bull. I congratulate them just the same, but in the back of my mind, I know they’re in for some steep disappointments in the future. Elk hunting is tough. Period. There are so many things that have to go right, and just one thing going wrong can send the hunt – and your emotions – into a downward tailspin.

From mother nature to human influence, there are a multitude of obstacles that elk hunters will encounter that can make hunting challenging, to say the least. Add in the variables that the elk themselves bring into the equation, and it can be easy to get frustrated and lose hope. However, a good understanding of how some of these obstacles can affect elk hunting, as well as some forethought on how to overcome them when they arise, will go a long way toward propelling you closer to success.

Outside the realm of the standard struggles that are involved in elk hunting, there are a few common challenges that seem to turn into stumbling blocks rather quickly. These frustrations often include factors that are out of our control, and it’s easy to throw our hands up and feel like there is nothing we can do. However, while we can’t always control other hunters, mother nature, or the elk, we can often control how we react, and that is the key.
